http://ua.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/okabelab/asami/asami.gifCURRENT RESEARCH PROJECTS:

1) New planning theory to refine the existing urbanized residential areas

In urbanized areas in large cities, such as Tokyo, vast amount of area has high density in urban land use with very poor urban infrastructure (roads, parks, etc.). A number of urban measure have been tried to improve the situation mostly in vain. This is partly due to the lack of planning theory that deals with the existing problems properly. In this project, a new planning theory will be proposed to remedy the situation.

2) Appropriate evaluation of residential environment

A number of indices meant to evaluate the residential environment fail to signify the correct environment, due to its inappropriate use. Conditions to check the appropriateness of indices, as well as handy methods to obtain appropriate indices, are developed.

3) Cognitive structure to evaluate townscapes

An objective method to evaluate the townscapes is not yet established, because of the lack of understanding of our cognitive structure. Using several experimental approaches, our cognitive process to evaluate townscapes is analyzed.

4) Automated designing system

Automated designing system of the housing plan, the block subdivision and the residential area plan will be constructed. To do so, the shape of elements and their allocation will be optimized. Moreover, it is intended that the system can also deal with abstract concepts, such as "human", "soft", and "well-organized".

5) Appraisal of lots using neural network algorithm

The current system of the appraisal of lots is dependent upon the experience of appraisers, who are trained specially. An automated appraisal system will be developed to partially take place of these experts' routine works.

6) Theoretical foundation of shape of rooms, houses, lots and blocks

Several important conditions to form particular shapes of these elements of cities are theoretically investigated as to the validity and limitation of morphological reasoning. It is expected that this study eventually expand to the problems of optimal shapes.

7) Suitable classification of household types for housing analyses

A new classification of household type suitable for housing analyses is proposed. Basically a new classification should reserve the variation of housing situation. Based on this idea, a new classification is derived analyzing a large database of household structure and housing situation.

8) Other topics of interest

New system of city planning regulation,   Search system of real estates with fuzzy information,   Shape determination problem of components in cities,   Simulation of city generation and development,   Information technology and city planning,   Significance and effects of policies for encouraging habitation near city centers,   Way-finding behavior,   Road network patterns: predictability of the whole from the parts,   Optimization of facility location,   Psychological resistance of slopes and detouring,   Children in cities,   Unconscious selection behavior,   Image formation of cities,   Townscape guide-lines,   Program for sharpening the sense of direction,   Description and real space,   logical exposition of sense and intuition

To those who are interested in choosing Yasushi Asami as a supervisor:

Basically I consider admitting foreign students to my research unit, if they have scholarship, such as Monbu-Kagaku-Sho (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, Japanese Government) Scholarship (by applying directly to the Department of Urban Engineering or to the Japanese Embassy in your country), ADB (Asian Development Bank) Scholarship, or any other competitive scholarship with decent amount of living expense.  (This is to confirm that my students can focus on graduate studies without fearing from the shortage in living expense.)

If you consider enrolling in master course, give me information on the following items:

1) c.v. (curriculum vitae)

2) Scholarship you have (or are now applying)

3) Research Plan: The research topic should be specific enough.  For example, city planning and housing policy are not specific enough.  The plan should include: background of the topic or problem, research aim, proposed research methodology, expected research results, possible extensions (if any)

4) Academic records

5) Published papers, if any

If you consider enrolling in doctoral course, give me information on the following items:
